Consider the possibility that everyone is doing the best they can with the tools and resources they have available. Try this on and see if you could make it fit for you, like a piece of clothing. Then imagine: if everyone is doing the best that they can—even if they caused you pain or made a choice you wouldn’t make—maybe it takes the sting away just a little. Think about yourself. Maybe you’ve done some things you’re not proud of or that has caused someone else pain. When you understand that what you did was the best that you could do at the time, maybe you could give yourself just a wee bit of grace.
