3 Steps to Expand Your Awareness of What’s Possible and Achievable For You

Let’s talk about Possibility Consciousness.

Possibility Consciousness is your awareness of what’s possible and achievable in your life.

I want to encourage you to expand yours.

S-t-r-e-t-c-h out your Possibility Consciousness to its maximum potential.

Imagine it’s like a balloon that will never pop. It will stretch and stretch and stretch. Your awareness can expand indefinitely. It can grow so big that it can even hold all the possibilities and achievements that you can imagine for yourself.

Do you have doubts? Are you feeling skeptical? Maybe you’re wondering how to know whether or not something is possible and achievable for you?

The answer is simple: look around you for evidence.

Humans do amazing things, big and small, from tackling a new routine in their daily lives to making huge contributions to the world. Athletes break new records, inventors create new products, researchers connect dots, entrepreneurs start new businesses, and parents are challenged in the most unexpected and unbelievable ways.

Just those few example reflect a boatload of evidence; so much in the world is possible and achievable. But maybe you’re now thinking, “Yeah, but none of those things are for me.”

Of course not.

That’s okay. They don’t have to be; they shouldn’t be. You get to set your mind on your own unique possibilities.

There ARE things you DO want and that DO light you up.

Do you believe you can have them? Or is your Possibility Consciousness so low that you’re cutting yourself short? Are you giving up without trying? Shelving your dreams?

If so, it’s time to expand. Here’s how.

Step 1: Be willing to change

Are you willing to look at things differently? Are you willing to question the rules? Are you willing to consider that you can create your own rules, pursue your own dreams, and trust that nobody’s going to get hurt? Everyone in your life will be fine. Just because you want to pursue something new, it doesn’t mean you’re going to cause suffering for anyone around you: not your spouse, your kids, or anyone else.

Maybe your life is exactly the way you want it, and you simply want one or more small and things, like one day a week to yourself. Or time to relax, shop, go to the beach, clean your house, or meditate.

Or maybe you want something bigger, like travel or a new relationship or a new adventure.

Either way….are you willing to change? 

After my divorce, I became very willing to change. I wanted to take a solo trip to Costa Rica, learn how to ride a motorcycle, and buy back a house that I loved (and had let go of after my divorce). When I thought about each and every one of these things (not at the same time), I felt so much excitement in my body before they ever happened. I tried on the excitement like a jacket, and I let that excitement drive my actions to try new things.

My excitement drove me to experiment, explore, and take small chances.

Step 2: Release your negative thoughts and emotions

Next, it’s time to become aware about what you think about and how you feel. You’ll need to learn to let go of all of the negative thoughts and all the negative emotions come up in your day-to-day life.

Here’s how to start. You simply ask yourself, “On a scale of 1 to 10 how much do I believe today that what I want is possible for me?” If the number is less than 10, then you write down ALL the negative thoughts and emotions that are coming up for you.

Yes, negative thoughts and emotions ARE going to creep up. Expanding your Possibility Consciousness and going after your desires is not all daisies and rainbows and lollipops (I wish it was). So you’ve got to get all that stuff out of your head and out of your body and onto a page. Maybe your negative thoughts are I can’t do it. It’s not possible for me. I don’t know how. Nobody would expect that from me. These sentences in your mind aren’t going to support you. Write them down.

You’re also going to check in with your emotions (aka feelings). This can be hard for some people. (Are you one of them?) Do you get so uncomfortable with feeling uncomfortable emotions that you will do anything to avoid them? Maybe—and you’re free from these if they don’t apply—maybe you over-eat, or over-drink, over-scroll, over-shop, or over-exercise (yes, even positive activities can be a form of numbing our emotions). Something to think about.

What ARE you feeling? Sad? Angry? Frustrated? Overwhelmed? Become aware of the feelings and how they’re driving your behavior.

Next, you can move on to step three.

Step 3: Use your imagination

Look at your brain dump from Step 2, then imagine:

  • What do I want to believe instead?
  • What do I want to feel instead?
  • If I DID believe and feel those things; what would my life be like?

If you’re not sure, make it up!

I get it; this may not come naturally. That’s okay; keep practicing. Tap into the imagination that you had as a kid. Go to that place in your mind and make up some positive thoughts. Try them on. If you believed them, who would you be? What would you do? How would you move in the world?

Write down all of it, and as you do, notice that your feelings shift. They’ll shift from a negative state—like frustration or self-doubt—to more a positive state—like hopeful or optimistic.

The more often you do this practice, the easier it will be, and the more naturally it will become. With time, you’ll begin to show up as that person, even when you haven’t accomplished your goal yet. You’ll feel like the person who has it already; the person whose Possibility Consciousness expanded like a balloon. THAT person will begin to get inspired and take new inspired action steps toward achieving and becoming.

Over time, you’ll BECOME the person and ACHIEVE.
